---|---|
Truncation |
Words may be right-hand truncated using an asterisk. Use a single asterisk * to truncate from 1-5 characters. Use a double asterisk ** for open-ended truncation. Examples : environment* fyodor dost** |
Operators |
Use "and" to specify multiple words in any field, in any order. If no operator is specified, "and" will be used by default, and will retrieve all search terms in your result. Use "or" to specify alternate terms in a search in any field, in any order. Use "and not" to exclude words. Parentheses group words together when using Boolean operators. Example : "capital punishment" or "death penalty" Example : Rico and not Puerto Example : (alaska or canada) and (adventure and not vacation) |
Proximity |
Use "near" to specify words close to each other, in any order. Use "within #" to specify terms which occur within # words of each other in the record. Example : California near university Example : america within 3 economy |
Fields | A field limit causes the system to search only the specified field for the specified word(s). Specify fields to search, using the field pulldown menu. Fields available for this database are a: (author), t: (title), s: (subject), and N: (note.) |
Grouping | Keyword search results are usually grouped by relevance to bring the most likely titles to the top of the list. Each group represents a similar level of relevance and results are sorted within the group by date or title. To get an ungrouped result set, use boolean operators to form a complex query. |
